Tornado watch for NYC and upstate
A tornado watch is in effect for New York City and the surrounding areas until 5 p.m. today, the National Weather Service reported.
The alert extends to all five boroughs as well as most other New York counties and parts of coastal New Jersey.
Half an inch to an inch of rain is expected as well, with warnings of minor flooding in urban areas and locations with poor drainage systems. Flash floods may be an issue in New York City.
Weather for the rest of the week is expected to be relatively tame and clear.
NOAA.gov is actually unavailable, along with many federal websites, although governmentshutdown.noaa.gov notes: “Specific NOAA web sites necessary to protect lives and property are operational and will be maintained.”
Last week, a weather warning in Alaska spelled out “PLEASE PAY US.”
Signs of an impending tornado include greenish clouds and a sound like a freight train.
