City officials are calling on eco-conscious residents to help care for the urban streetscape.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino today announced the debut of Boston Adopt-a-Tree, a pilot program that will run in Mattapan, South Boston and Roslindale.

The young street trees were planted by the City of Boston’s Parks and Recreation Department, and are less than 7 years old.

According to city officials, the trees are vulnerable to water loss, weeds and damage from the urban environment.

“I’d like to thank all the residents who will become stewards of our street trees through Adopt-a-Tree,” Menino said. “By helping preserve our tree cover, they are playing a huge role in improving our city’s health, increasing pride in their neighborhoods and ‘greenovating’ Boston for future generations.”

Through the program’s partners and interactive website, adoptatree.greenovateboston.org, residents can find a tree to adopt and join a community of tree adopters in improving the streetscape.

Tree care kits donated by the Dorchester Home Depot will be given to the first 50 adopters. Each kit includes gardening gloves, a trowel, soil cultivator, tree guard and watering can.
