The second African-American woman in Philadelphia history elected to its City Council died Sunday. Augusta Clark was 81.

The cause of the former City Councilwoman’s death has not yet been released.

City Council President Darrell Clarke, who announced the news of the former Councilwoman’s passing late Sunday, said she “was a peacemaker during some tumultuous years in City Hall.”

“She always found a way to bring people together, and the kindness of her heart was undeniable,” he said.

Augusta Clark, who earned an undergraduate degree from Drexel University and a Law degree from Temple University, was first elected to council in 1980. She is best known for her passionate involvement in the public  school system.

“Councilwoman Clark’s advocacy for Philadelphia’s public schools in particular won’t soon be forgotten,” Darrell Clarke said.

After her retirement from council chambers in 2000, Augusta Clarke served on Mayor John Street’s cabinet.

When Darrell Clarke first sought elected office, he said, “I encountered many Philadelphians who assumed I was Councilwoman Clark’s son.”

“She was so popular back then with residents,” he added, “I have to admit I was at times tempted to not correct them.”
