Animal rights activists are outraged at reports that a 12-year-old girl in Queens intentionally killed a kitten last month.

And apparently authorities are as well.

After a call was made to the ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement department by a witness, the ASPCA launched an investigation.

The incident allegedly occurred on September 11 at the intersection of 102nd St. and 101st Ave. in Queens. The preteen is accused of intentionally throwing a cat into traffic. ASPCA officials said the cat died shortly after being hit by a car.

“The callousness demonstrated in this case is certainly disturbing,” said Stacy Wolf, senior vice president of the ASPCA’s Animal Cruelty Group. “We can only hope that this young lady takes responsibility for her actions and understands that cruelty to animals will not be tolerated in our society.”

The girl was arrested by New York state peace officers on October 10 and brought to the nearby NYPD police precinct. She was charged with one count of aggravated animal cruelty and given a Family Court summons.

Because she is a juvenile, the maximum sentence she faces is placement in a group home or other juvenile facility.

She could also be ordered to pay restitution to the kitten’s owner.

A recent partnership between the NYPD and the ASPCA launched a pilot program in the Bronx that has the NYPD responding to animal cruelty complaints. In the other four boroughs, the ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement peace officers still respond to those reports for now.
