A North Andover High School student who was punished for picking up a drunk friend from a party has gained national attention and the support of hundreds of people who are urging the school district to reverse its decision.

Erin Cox, a senior at North Andover High School and the captain of the volleyball team, was suspended for five games and demoted because of the incident, according to WBZ.

A couple of weeks ago, Cox drove to Boxford to pick up a friend at a party who had called her for a ride because she had been drinking. Just after Cox arrived, so did the police. However, the police later cleared Cox and said she had not been drinking and was not in possession of alcohol.

Despite that, the school district still punished her, citing a zero tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol.

A lawyer for Cox filed a motion against the school last week.

Since then, Cox’s story has gained national attention, including on “Good Morning America,” and spread across the Internet.

A Change.org petition started by a woman in Kentucky and had more than 1,000 supporters as of Tuesday afternoon.

The lawyer for the school district told the Boston Herald that the education officials are trying to take a “principled stand” against a serious issue.
