Irate seniors, veterans, tenants, parents and government workers today delivered a giant “cease and desist” order to the state GOP headquarters protesting the federal government shutdown and Republican threats to force the first U.S. default, on the eve of the U.S. reaching its debt ceiling limit Thursday.

Organizers of the protest called it an “emergency response to these dangerous Republican tactics.”

“We will be following up on our letter of Sept. 30 to GOP’s Boston office in which we urged them to repudiate the extremists in the Republican Party in D.C.,” said Michael Kane, executive director of the Mass Alliance of HUD tenants.

“But they have not replied to our letter or issued a public statement along these lines, which is why we’re going there again. Already the sequester cuts and shutdown have jeopardized the wellbeing of millions. But a government default will have far more widespread impacts across the country and threaten the U.S. and world economy,” Kane said.

Speakers will include furloughed federal employees, senior citizens and others who organizers said will be strongly impacted if the debt ceiling is not raised.

The group will also call on the state GOP to tell the national party leadership to reopen the government and raise the debt limit immediately, “without preconditions,” and will ask President Barack Obama to stand against GOP demands for cuts to Social Security, Medicare and other federal programs.

Wednesday’s protest was sponsored by the Budget for All Campaign with the support of the Mass Alliance of HUD Tenants, American Federation of Government Employees/Local 3258, MoveOn and allied labor, peace and social justice groups. It is one of more than 40 similar cease-and-desist actions nationwide called by USAction, the Coalition for Human Needs, Americans for Tax Fairness, American Federation of Government Employees and other organizations.
