A local volunteer organization that fights street harassment will head to Tavern in the Square in Allston tomorrow in the hope of empowering people to reclaim space that is “traditionally unwelcoming.”

Hollaback! Boston hosts monthly Take Back the Bar events in the Boston-area, and Friday, they plan to hit up Tavern in the Square on Brighton Avenue.

The “about” section of the campaign’s Facebook page reads: “Are you sick of feeling unsafe when you go out at night? Have you been harassed, groped, bothered, or otherwise made to feel like you don’t belong somewhere? Then help us take back the bars!”

The group said in an announcement that Friday’s gathering is not a protest: ”We’ll begin arriving at 8pm to beat the rush, but you can join the group at any point in the evening. Remember: this is not a protest or a confrontational event, just a low-key gathering to create a safe space within a traditionally less-welcoming space.”

As for the venue, a member of the organization said on Twitter that they have received stories from individuals who have not felt safe or have had “bad experiences” at the pub, which is slated to open a location in Boston’s South Station later this fall.

The restaurant’s general manager, Patrick Dillon, said he was aware of the event, and that he applauds the group’s objective and welcomes its members.

“I haven’t spoken to anyone from the group yet; I’m going to try to contact them through Facebook. We do everything possible to create a safe and fun environment for our guests,” Dillon said, adding that the pub regularly employs up to a dozen security guards to ensure that guests aren’t hassled.

Hollaback!Boston is a local chapter of an international movement that fights street harassment.

Last month, the group released the results of a “State of the Streets” survey asking 543 Boston-area participants about their experience with street harassment.Eighty-eight percent of those who responded claimed to have experienced harassment in Boston.
