New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie today dropped his appeal to challenge gay marriage the same day same-sex couples were married throughout the state.

According to NJ.com, the decision means the ruling allowing gay couples to marry will continue to be law in New Jersey.

Gay marriage is now legalized in 14 states in the country, and New Jersey became the first to pass it after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to strike down DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act.

Colin Reed, a Christie spokesman, told the Star-Leger, “Although the governor strongly disagrees with the court substituting its judgment for the constitutional process of the elected branches or a vote of the people, the court has now spoken clearly as to their view of the New Jersey constitution and, therefore, same-sex marriage is the law. The governor will do his constitutional duty and ensure his administration enforces the law as dictated by the New Jersey Supreme Court.”
