Boston Mayor-elect Martin Walsh touted his stance on late night MBTA service during his campaign push, saying that he wants public transportation to be available later in the evening.

With last week’s victory, the Globe reports, night life-loving residents are waiting to see if the promise will come to fruition.

Walsh has described himself as a “strong proponent” of extending T hours later into the evening, saying in response to a Globe survey of mayoral candidates last month: “The most realistic funding approach is probably a mix of state aid and creative public-private partnerships here in the city,” Walsh wrote in his response. “Having represented Boston for 16 years on Beacon Hill, I am the candidate best positioned to win the necessary support from the Legislature. Beyond that, I would work with private institutions, especially universities whose students are likely to be major users, to fully fund the extended service.”

City Councilor Mike Ross, a fellow support of late-night service, said “If Marty is suggesting that this is an important priority to him… partners would see this as an important priority to them, too.”

Some MBTA customers responded to the prospect on social media.

“I’d rather have reliable @mbta service during the day than have it run late into the night. Red line has been a mess lately. @marty_walsh,” tweeted @slathering, while @Jfree36008 weighed in, saying: “How can @marty_walsh make late-night #mbta service happen when it’s controlled by the state? I’d settle for the buses running on time.”
