Kanye West speaks at Harvard: ‘The world can be saved through design’

Rapper and fashion aficionado Kanye West stopped by Harvard University Graduate School of Design on Sunday before his performance at the TD Garden to preach the power of design and hand out free concert tickets to Ivy League students.

West made his fashion fervor known, saying designs were capable of creating a “utopia” and thanking the aspiring designers for “not (being) lazy about creation.”

“I just wanted to tell you guys: I really do believe that the world can be saved through design, and everything needs to actually be ‘architected,’” he told students.

“I believe that utopia is actually possible — but we’re led by the least noble, the least dignified, the least tasteful, the dumbest, and the most political. So in no way am I a politician; I’m usually at my best politically incorrect and very direct,” said West.

The visit reportedly came as a surprise to design students, according to Archinect.com, which offered a full transcript of West’s brief remarks.

West’s girlfriend, Kim Kardashian, was also there, according to her Instagram.

“My baby speaking at the Harvard Graduate School of Design,” Kardashian wrote along with a photo of Kanye surrounded by students.

Pitchfork reported that West was joined by Virgil Abloh, the creative director of West’s art agency DONDA. Abloh told the website that the lecture was part of the “DONDA design lecture series.”

A video of the remarks was also posted on YouTube.
