Traffic safety advocacy group Transportation Alternatives will be hosting a series of events citywide to help New Yorkers learn how to get involved with their local community board.

The first event will take place Thursday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Brooklyn YWCA in Boerum Hill.

The group generally functions as an advocate for “livable streets” — issues regarding pedestrian and cyclist safety, as well as mass transit like the city’s subway and bus systems.

With this initiative, however, they plan to function more as a good government organization, encouraging greater civic participation.

Traffic safety has been drawn to the fore recently as a top public safety issue, increasing awareness of Transportation Alternatives and other groups like theirs, as well as drawing out New Yorkers who may not have previously considered their everyday concerns — livable streets, for example — political issues.

As a result, TA leaders say, they have increasingly been approached by New Yorkers curious about how to get on their local community board.

“We realized that there isn’t really anyone out there educating New Yorkers about how the process works,” said Brian Zumhagen, TA’s communications manager.

Increasing civic participation in order to make sure all New Yorkers’ needs are met and concerns are heard was a major tenet of Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio’s successful mayoral campaign.
