A Scituate woman is facing a negligence charge after she backed her SUV through a Cohasset hardware store.

On Sunday afternoon, Carol A. McGurl, 51, backed her Honda CRV through the glass front of Aubuchon Hardware Company in Cohasset as she prepared to load a heavy case of ice melt into the trunk of her vehicle, Wicked Local Cohasset reports.  She told police she wanted to get close to the building because the melt was so heavy, but she accidentally hit the wrong pedal, sending it backwards into the cashier area of the hardware store, and taking out a row of artificial Christmas trees on display.

However, police soon discovered that McGurl, who is about 5 feet tall, was driving with a homemade extender taped to the gas pedal of her car to help her reach it.

“It’s highly unusual for a person employ a homemade device such as this to facilitate them reaching the control pedals of a vehicle,” Acting Police Chief William Quigley told WickedLocal. “We are all thankful that this crash did not end up as a holiday tragedy.”

Employees and shoppers who were inside the store at the time of the crash were able to jump out of harm’s way, preventing any injuries. The incident was caught on the store’s security camera, and shows McGurl’s CRV plowing through the windows all the way up to the cash register.

McGurl will appear in court to face the charge of negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
