Slow buses given ‘Schleppie,’ ‘Pokey’ awards
The Straphangers Campaign and Transportation Alternatives doled out their annual “Pokey” and “Schleppie” awards to the city’s slowest and least reliable buses.
The Pokey, a gold snail on a pedestal, went to the M42 and M50, both crosstown buses in Midtown Manhattan.
SC and TA staff and volunteers said the buses averaged 3.4 miles-per-hour at noon on a weekday.
The groups said a wooden row boat can travel faster than that in still water without wind.
“Our advice to the M42 and M50: Don’t challenge a row boat to race around the Central Park Reservoir,” said Gene Russianoff, attorney for the Straphangers Campaign.
The Schleppie, two gold elephants on a pedestal, went to the M101/2/3 for big gaps in service or multiple buses arriving at once.
More information on the awards is available on the Straphangers website.
