The man accused of torturing an innocent dog now known as “Puppy Doe” headed to court in Dedham on Thursday, where he pleaded not guilty to 12 counts of animal cruelty and 1 count of misleading a police investigation.

According to information released by the Norfolk County District Attorney’s office Thursday afternoon, Judge Susan Garsh ordered the defendant held without bail. He is due to return to Norfolk Superior Court on Feb. 11, 2014 for pre-trial conference.

“Please be assured that these three agencies are working in concert to identify and hold accountable the person or persons responsible for the torture of Puppy Doe” said Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey in a statement. ”It is highly unlikely that this level of sadistic cruelty could be shown to one animal and not be part of a pattern involving other animals or perhaps vulnerable people.”

Czerkawski was working as a caretaker for an elderly woman in her Whitwell Street home in Quincy earlier this year when the abuse allegedly happened, authorities previously told the Metro.

Mary Nee, the president of the Animal Rescue League of Boston, previously said that the case was one of the worst instances of dog abuse she’s seen.
