The Callahan Tunnel shuts down Friday evening at 11 p.m., kicking off a three month period that will prohibit commuters from driving through the widely-used gateway to East Boston and Logan International Airport.

The purpose of this project is to completely rehabilitate the Tunnel, which carries traffic northbound from Boston’s North End to Logan International Airport and Route 1A in East Boston, safely, efficiently, and with the least possible impact to road users and the surrounding community, according to the Mass DOT.

For the first week of construction, from Dec. 28 to Jan. 4, workers will tackle a variety of tasks including demolishing curbs in the tunnel, and construction near the portals in the North End and East Boston.

In order to deal with the expected delays, the Department of Transportation has released a list of detour routes to aid commuters.

“MassDOT is better staging our jobs, using technology and incentivizing contractors in a way to help limit the impacts infrastructure projects have on the public,” Secretary Davey previously said in a statement. “To supplement our efforts, we need the public to be our partners in this long overdue rehabilitation and learn about the detours and use public transit when possible.”

  1. Nice that Metro feels free to steal other people photos to use in their news stories. I guess Copyright only applies to their own stuff (per their terms of service) but not to other people’s? You guys took this photo off my Flickr stream and posted it without my permission.
