Hingham woman attacked by raccoon in bed

A Hingham woman was attacked by a raccoon while in bed.

A Hingham woman had a rude awakening when the furry creature that climbed into her bed turned out to be a raccoon, not her pet cat.

The 73-year-old woman reached down to pet the animal when it climbed in her bed, and was subsequently attacked. She sustained injuries to her fingers and face and was taken to a local hospital, according to the Patriot Ledger.

The raccoon managed to enter the home via a small back door meant for the cat.

After authorities received a call from the woman, a local environmental officer was able to rush to the home and trap the animal, which was later killed. A state lab is testing a sample taken from the raccoon to determine whether it was rabid.

Animal Control Officer Leslie Badger told the Ledger that either the animal was rabid or it had been taken in by an area family, who fed it and then set it free when it got too large to care for.

“People need to understand that you can’t feed these animals,” she told the Ledger. “It turns into a situation for someone else that has no idea.”

The elderly woman’s cat was found safe.
