Physicist resigns in warming fight

An emeritus professor of physics at the University of California and long-standing member of the American Physical Society has resigned after calling claims of man-made global warming ‘the greatest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud I have seen in my long life.’

Harold Lewis has been a member of the APS for 67 years, but in a letter of resignation last week said massive amounts of money now available to scientists researching so-called man-made climate change had corrupted basic science.

Lewis accused the APS of closing down debate on the causes of climate change in order to protect research funding.

“The money flood has become the raison d’etre of much physics research, the vital sustenance of much more, and it provides the support for untold numbers of professional jobs,” he wrote in a letter to APS president Curtis G. Callan Jr. of Princeton University.

Lewis continued: “It is, of course, the global warming scam, with the (literally) trillions of dollars driving it, that has corrupted so many scientists and has carried APS before it like a rogue wave. It is the greatest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud I have seen in my long life as a physicist.”

He said the APS’s methods of closing down debate on climate change were a ‘corruption’ of its purpose.

He referred to ‘Climate Gate,’ a scandal that broke last year when e-mails from climate-change researchers, who believe that human activity is the major cause of climate change, were hacked into. The universities employing the scientists exonerated them — something that Lewis said was no surprise given the amount of money attached to the research.
