Royals rethink security policy

Britain’s royal family may need to switch to more secure forms of transport after protesters made physical contact with Prince Charles’s wife, Camilla, in an attack on their car, Home Secretary Theresa May said.

“What we need to do is to find out what happened in this incident and to find out if there is anything that can be learned,” May said. “One of the issues that may very well be looked at is the whole question of the appropriate transport that’s used by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall,” as the heir to the throne’s spouse is known.

May confirmed a report that protesters had made physical contact with Camilla in the attack in central London on Thursday, after the House of Commons voted to allow universities to triple tuition fees. Police clashed with thousands of demonstrating students around Parliament during the day. The violence led politicians to question the police’s handling of the protests and their protection of the royal couple.

According to reports, their car was kicked, a window cracked and white paint thrown over it. May said she couldn’t confirm claims that Camilla had been jabbed in the ribs with a stick.
