Clive Palmer: Australian billionaire tempts fate with Titanic II
This one could top our list of potentially disastrous ideas: Australian billionaire Clive Palmer is planning to build a replica of Titanic and sail it from England to New York, the same voyage planned for the original.
Palmer has recruited the state-owned Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to build the Titanic II in China, according to CBS. The ship could be ready to set sail as early as 2016. It will be designed with all the luxuries of a modern ship, but will be a replica planned with the help of a historical research team to accurately recreate the Titanic, which claimed 1,500 lives when it sank 100 years ago.
The first question that comes to mind is, “Why?” Palmer, who made his fortune through real estate and coal mining, could build any cruise liner, probably one much bigger than the Titanic. So why re-create this morbid piece of history?
In a statement, Palmer called it “a tribute to the spirit of the men and women who worked on the original Titanic.”
He added, “”It is going to be designed so it won’t sink.”
Didn’t anyone tell Palmer that’s what they said about the original Titanic?
