Today in medicine: Celeb recipes contain more fat

If you’re cooking tonight, a star chef’s recipe may not be the healthiest option.

Update on the world’s health

Study subjects: Worldwide data

Location of study: U.S.

Results: The latest Global Burden of Disease Study, the most comprehensive analysis to-date of health around the world, finds that fewer deaths result from infectious diseases, maternal and child illness and malnutrition than 20 years ago. This results in less childhood deaths, but more young and middle-aged adult deaths from injury and chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease.

Significance: Over the past 40 years, men and women have lived longer by about 10 years, but injury and illness are prevalent in their lives.

Pot may not help with pain

Study subjects: Multiple sclerosis patients

Location of study: U.K.

Results: During trials of Sativex, a drug made from cannabis extract, there was no marked improvement of symptoms, per the Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin.

Significance: The small improvement in symptoms in those patients using Sativex was deemed insufficient to warrant its use in clinical practice.

Non-smokers win yet again

Study subjects: 5,300 patients with spinal disorder-related pain

Location of study:
U.S.

Results: The University of Rochester’s Department of Orthopaedics found that patients who had never smoked and those who had quit had significantly less pain than current smokers and those who quit smoking during the study.

Significance: Previous research has shown a tie between smoking and low back pain, intervertebral (spine) disc disease and inferior patient outcomes after surgery.

Celeb chefs’ recipes

Study subjects: Cross sectional study

Location of study: U.K.

Results: Recipes created by popular TV chefs contain significantly more calories, fat and saturated fat and less fiber per portion than prepared supermarket-ready meals, BMJ.com says.

Significance: Researchers suggested that cookbook recipes include nutritional information and that TV chefs’ recipes be regulated.
