Egyptian youth plan to launch President Morsi into space

Egypt’s unpopular president Mohammed Morsi faces ejection not only from his country but the entire planet.

On Thursday, activists from the April 6 Youth Movement nominated him for a competition to win a trip to space. The group, which was instrumental in the ousting of former president Hosni Mubarak in the 2011 revolution, has corralled thousand of votes for Morsi, who was in third place to win the trip on Friday morning.

“No one in the universe can put up with blatant lies, reneging on promises except for the brotherly people of the moon,” the group posted on its Facebook page. “It is for this reason that the president needs your votes. President Morsi, we wish you safe travels.”

The Muslim Brotherhood leader is under fierce pressure after perceived attempts to monopolize power and stifle dissent. “It’s creative but we are serious,” April 6 campaigner Mohammed Adel told Metro. “We have already tried protests and awareness campaigns – this is another way of saying this president is not working for us.”

The Muslim Brotherhood leader and US-educated engineer had previously claimed to have worked for NASA, although this is challenged. “If he liked working with NASA before, he should have a chance to do it again,” Adel said.

The competition, a promotional campaign from men’s grooming company Axe, promises to send winners 103 kilometers (64 miles) into space. Anyone can be nominated and the contestant receiving the most votes advances to the next stage.

President Morsi could not be reached for comment.
