Chinese ‘miracle baby’ returned to mother who dropped him in toilet after birth
The infant heralded as a “miracle baby” in China has been returned to the mother who told authorities she accidentally dropped him in a toilet after giving birth.
The baby boy was discovered lodged in a sewer pipe before a harrowing two-hour rescue by emergency workers using pliers and saws Saturday. Miraculously, he was unharmed. According to reports, the baby’s mother told police she became pregnant after a one-night stand and kept her pregnancy a secret because she couldn’t afford an abortion.
However, she denied that she purposely flushed the baby down the toilet and said he slipped from her hands after she gave birth. The incident sparked outrage in China, a nation with a dark history of infanticide due to government restrictions against having more than one child per family.
“It has been defined as an accident,” a police officer told the DPA news agency Thursday, according to Al Jazeera.
The mother of the baby was previously considered for attempted murder charges, but police will not charge her at all.
