Every now and then we come across a news story that really just warms our hearts.

Just one day after Canada Day, we read about an amazing story from our friendly northern neighbors about a man who left a $10,000 tip for a diner owner whose daughter is sick.

It all started about one week ago when the owner of a Canadian diner struck up a conversation with a customer. The conversation eventually led to the owner, Cliff Luther, telling the customer, Bob Erb, about his daughter who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

The conversation started with Luther noticed Erb’s Legalize Marijuana pin. With a last name like Erb, it’s only natural he’s a pot activist.

“He was telling me how he things legalizing marijuana is the way to go, you know, which was interesting,” Luther told the Ottawa Citizen. “One thing came to another, and he’s from B.C. and I was telling him how my 25-year-old daughter is out there right now and has just been diagnosed with cancer.”

It turns out this was a familiar story for Erb. He lost his own son four years ago to cancer, at the age of 26.

“He was emotional about it, just as any parent would be in that kind of situation,” Erb said. “[Luther] was just looking to talk and learn about things from another perspective.”

A few days later, Erb returned to the diner. After finishing his burger and fries he asked Luther for a pen.

“He asked for a pen and said: ‘Here, you can just take the bill out of that,” Luther said. “It was a check for $10,000. He just kind of said, ‘If you need to get out there quickly, this will help you.”

Erb had won $25 million in the lottery last fall.

“It just shows how good people can be, you know, how he had good fortune and he was able to pass it on, and I believe he’s a very generous man,” Luther said. “It’s really lifted my spirits. There are just some really caring people out there.”

Hopefully Luther will cash the check soon and book a flight to visit his daughter.
