ABC ‘World News’ in hot water over misidentifying Gaza as Israel

The folks at ABC’s “World News” put themselves in hot water Tuesday over a mistake in which they identified destruction in Gaza as being in Israel.

Host Diane Sawyer made the comments in a lead-in to a piece about the continuing violence in the region, touched off by the murder of three Israeli teenagers. The three teens were kidnapped on June 12, with their bodies found in a field on June 30.

ABC showed still photographs of the destruction from a bombing of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. But Sawyer, in her introduction before throwing to reporter Alex Marquardt, said the photos were of Israelis, not Palestinians.

“And we take you overseas to the rockets raining down on Israel today, as Israel tried to shoot them out of the sky. All part of the tinder box, Israelis and Palestinians. And here an Israeli family trying to salvage what they can, one woman standing speechless among the ruins,” Sawyer said.

Israel has sustained a bombing campaign against the Palestinians and Hamas since the teenagers were found killed. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyu has held Hamas, the de facto leaders in Gaza, responsible for the kidnapping and killings.

ABC apologized for the mistake in a statement released Thursday morning.

“On Tuesday night ‘World News’ aired a report on the conflict between the Palestinians and Israelis, including attacks from both sides,” the statement read. “In the introduction to the story, we mistakenly identified a family depicted in a still photo. They are Palestinian, not Israeli. We regret the error and will correct it.”

ABC has not said whether they will correct it on air.
