Cuomo vows to pass same-sex marriage

Gov. Andrew Cuomo strategized with gay marriage activists yesterday in an effort to legalize same-sex marriage in New York State.

Cuomo again promised to resurrect a bill legalizing same-sex marriage this year, Freedom to Marry founder Evan Wolfson told Metro. Wolfson was at yesterday’s meeting.

“The governor repeated his strong commitment to doing what’s right for New York,” Wolfson said.

Cuomo met with about 12 advocates in Albany, including City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Ross Levi, executive director of the Empire State Pride Agenda.

Levi and Wolfson will speak today at a “Marriage Now!” panel, hosted by the West Village-based Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center, where they’ll discuss the importance of pushing for legalization.

“New Yorkers should  not have to go to Niagara Falls, Canada, to have the protections they should have in Niagara Falls, New York, and throughout the state,” Wolfson said.

A bill to legalize gay marriage was beaten down in the Senate in 2009; and this time, supporters will have to convince a Republican-controlled Senate to pass the legislation.

State Sen. Thomas Duane has promised to bring up a bill, which his spokesman told Metro they’re still tweaking.
