Party on Coney Island as rides return for new season
CONEY ISLAND – Borough President Marty Markowitz christened the seasonal opening of the Cyclone roller coaster with a traditional bottle of egg cream while the first 100 people were treated to a free ride.
Sunday also marked the end of the “Congress of Curious Peoples,” a 10-day festival celebrating the boardwalk’s most bizarre personalities. Sword swallowers, bearded ladies and fire-eaters all performed for crowds, although no one got to “Shoot the Freak,” since the game closed last year when its lease was not renewed.
Luna Park also reopened for its second year. The city reported more than 400,000 visitors to the park last summer.
