Brown vs. Featherman: GOP mayoral race still up in air

Brown: The winner?

After the County Board of Elections said that Republican mayoral candidate Karen Brown led opponent John Featherman by 58 votes but said there were still provisional ballots to be counted, the leader declared victory.

“I’m too far ahead of him, even if he got all the provisionals,” said Brown, a retired teacher who went from Democratic City Council candidate to GOP mayoral challenger. “I’m looking forward to the press taking me seriously … to talk about the issues that make a difference in people’s daily lives. Because of all the [GOP] infighting, voters didn’t get to know either of us.”

Not so fast, said Featherman, who believes the race isn’t over since the county hasn’t indicated how many provisionals there are.

“If I lose, I’ll concede and move on, but I’m not going to do that when the votes aren’t all counted,” said Featherman, who indicated he may contest the results when the final numbers come in. “This race is not over.”
