UPDATED: Brighton standoff victim dies, suspect in custody
The suspect in this morning’s standoff in Brighton is in police custody and the victim has died of gunshot wounds, according to reports from the scene.
Still very little information is available about the chaotic situation that unfolded on Ledgemere Road just before 11 a.m.
Police said the suspect is in his 50s and the victim is in his 70s.
Heavily armed police, some with M-16s, escorted people from the area after reports of a gunman on the loose.
Chestnut Hill Avenue was closed at the Wallingford Road intersection and all houses on Wallingford were evacuated.
Three residents who didn’t want to be identified said police were walking up and down streets evacuating residents but wouldn’t say why.
Chris, a Union Street resident, said he was walking up Chestnut Hill Ave. around 11 a.m.when a State Police trooper told him to return to his house because someone was running around with a shotgun.
A resident of Wallingford Street and lifetime Brighton resident said police have inundated the neighborhood.
“I saw a SWAT team with large guns hiding behind the bushes, cars, everything,” the resident said.
