Advice for parents now that sex ed is mandated in public schools
A new mandate requiring sex education in all NYC public schools has proven to be controversial for parents who would prefer that conversation be left for inside the home.
Community Healthcare Network has put together some suggestions to parents who might want to talk to their kids about sex before they head into classroom. Dorothy Farley, vice president of social services at CHN recommends these tips to parents:
– Make it an ongoing dialogue: use news stories (i.e., Strauss-Kahn case), music, videos, or magazine covers at newsstands as opportunities to talk to your kids about what they know and what they think.
– It’s never too late to start a conversation.
– Don’t preach to your kids, talk to them about making the right decisions and protecting themselves.
– Help kids identify people they can talk to when they don’t want to talk to their parents.
