Woburn Police Officer shot during attempted armed robbery

A SWAT team prepares to search for a second suspect in the Woburn jewelry heist.

Police from various agencies, both local and state, responded to the scene in Woburn where an officer was shot after several suspects allegedly robbed a local jewelry store just after 11 a.m this morning.

According to the Middlesex District Attorney’s office, officer Robert Denapoli, 51, a 16-year veteran of the Woburn Police
Department, was shot by one of the suspects.

Denapoli was
transported to Lahey Clinic where he is currently being treated and State Police Spokesman David Procopio said his prognosis is good.

One
suspect was shot at the scene and has been transported to an area
hospital where he is under arrest. Authorities are not releasing his name at
this time.

Police are still searching at least one more suspect, using helicopters, dogs and large numbers of personnel going door to door.

Witnesses at the scene said they heard between six and 10 shots fired near the intersection of Russell And Cambridge Streets in the Boston suburb. The robbery occurred at Musto Jewlers in the Four Corners sections of Woburn.

Another witness said they saw one suspect run across the street with a handgun.

It is the second time less than a year that a Woburn police officer was shot during a robbery attempt.

John Maguire, 60, a husband and father of three was nearing
retirement after 34 years of service when was he was shot to death trying to stop two men robbing from the jewelry section of Kohl’s department store the day after Christmas last year.

He was the first Woburn police officer killed in the line of
duty.
