Warning sent after series of Esplanade assaults

Massachusetts authorities are urging young women to be aware of their
surroundings while walking and running along the Esplanade.

A group of police officials from various law enforcement agencies warned residents — particularly new students — to be cautious when walking alone.

The warning has become an annual reminder when the new school year starts and as police continue their search for the man responsible for attacking women along the Esplanade and in South Boston.

“As we welcome a new crop of students to the Boston area, we want people to stay alert and stay aware as they explore the city,” said Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said yesterday while standing with police near the Hatch Shell.

Conley, as well as state, Boston and MBTA police urged students to adhere to their tips to stay safe.
Police are still searching for a man they believe is responsible for four sexual assaults on women.
Three of the attacks occurred between 2007 and 2009 late at night or early in the morning. The fourth attack occurred in 2006 in the area of Joe Moakley Park.

Two other women were also attacked this summer along the Esplanade and police are trying to determine if the same man is responsible.

Tremana White, 22, who was walking along the Esplanade yesterday, said she doesn’t listen to music and is observant of who is around her when she makes her near daily walk along the Charles River.
“Even if you feel comfortable you always have to be aware of your surroundings,” said the 22-year-old from Jamaica Plain.
