A holiday roadblock for drivers

Traffic throughout Boston was at a stand still yesterday with the movie shooting closing down the Zakim bridge, the Tufts 10k run and the Occupy Boston rally march.

Some nightmares might include zombie attacks, but for commuters trying to make their way into or out of the city yesterday, the traffic was the real nightmare.

Ironically, it was caused by zombies.

Despite government employees having yesterday off and many offices closed for the Columbus Day holiday, those who had to work found themselves in the midst of what felt worse than a regular weekday commute.

“[Interstate] 93 North and South were a disaster at 11 and 10 [yesterday] morning because of this shutting down of the bridge,” said Rich Kirkland, a traffic reporter for WBZ-AM. “At one time it was bumper to bumper at 10 in morning from East Milton Square to the O’Neill tunnel.”

Both sides of the Zakim Bridge were shut down about six times during the morning hours because of filming for the Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges movie titled “R.I.P.D.” about undead police officers.

As helicopters filmed a car chase scene that took place on the bridge, traffic spilled out of the tunnel’s on-ramps and onto downtown surface roads.

Traffic was also backed up along Storrow Drive as the ramps to the Massachusetts Avenue bridge were shut down because of the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women. Thousands of runners made their way from the Boston Common, over the bridge and onto Memorial Drive.

Adding to the downtown traffic issues were the Occupy Boston march and the fans coming to watch the Bruins play at matinee at the TD Garden. However, those events caused only localized traffic issues.

Boston’s Transportation Department issued an advisory for various holiday weekend events in the city. The Tufts race was the only event listed for yesterday.

Most of the traffic had dissipated by the afternoon.
