Metro Giving: Fight cancer one breath at a time

A class of survivors.

Welcome back to Metro Giving! Every other Tuesday, Metro profiles an individual or a group in New York City that is giving back. Know someone who should be featured in Metro Giving? E-mail charity@metro.us.

Yoga studios may be as ubiquitous as coffee shops in New York City, but finding a class specifically tailored to cancer patients and survivors is not so easy.

The Libby Ross Breast Cancer Foundation
stepped in to fill that void last month with the introduction of Pose for Pink, a series of free yoga classes for both cancer survivors and those currently battling the disease.

“Studies show the use of yoga, breath work and asanas [yoga positions] help speed and aid recovery while undergoing treatment,” program director Lindsey Pearson told Metro.

The free classes are offered twice a month, typically on the second and fourth Saturday of every month at Yoga Vida in Manhattan. The Pose for Pink classes are open to women with all types of cancer, not just breast cancer.

Instructor Amanda Murdock said many cancer survivors feel like their bodies have turned against them and the exercise helps them connect again.

“It’s not about the yoga,” she said. “It’s about the women getting in touch with their bodies and healing.”

The organization is run completely by volunteers.

“We’re building strength and community until someone finds a cure,” Pearson said.

Weekend class

The next free Pose for Pink yoga class is this Saturday, Oct. 29, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Yoga Vida NYC at 666 Broadway.
