Jakobson Properties: Landlords called out on Twitter

Fix it!

Forget the streets — angry tenants are now taking to the tweets.

A group of renters has decided to speak out against their landlord, Jakobson Properties, creating a Twitter handle and Tumblr account to cull accounts of what they say is neglect in their buildings.

“We kept complaining about things and never saw any results,” said John, the East Village resident who created @Jakobson_Fix_It on Nov. 7. “We want to hold Jakobson accountable,” added the Jakobson tenant, who didn’t want to reveal his last name out of fear of repercussion.

Jakobson Properties, which owns and manages roughly 50 buildings across the boroughs, is a cheap, popular landlord for students in the East Village.

“The stories are pretty wild,” said Holly Alexander, the social media consultant for Jakobson. “We’ve been trying to respond … to make it very clear that we want to hear this.”

But John says there’s still more to be done.

“We need to build communities that keep landlords in check,”he said.

’Net noise

Anonymous commenters complained of the following conditions on the groups Tumblr page:

For starters, if it weren’t bad enough that they hadn’t repainted the walls before I moved in, they didn’t bother to remove the former tenant before I moved in!

During the snow storm the “roof leaked” into my 3rd floor apartment and destroyed my ceiling. I called the emergency maintenance line and this creepy guy came and gave me PAPER TOWELS and PLASTIC WRAP.

Apartment was rented out with non working shower, missing front door lock and window frames which had separated from the building wall. It has never been fixed despite multiple requests. Had to hire outside locksmith and pay for the lock repairs myself.
