NYC honors soldiers in Veterans Day parade

The streets of Fifth Avenue in Midtown were lined with people this
morning as marchers honored America’s war heroes in the 92nd annual
Veterans Day Parade. Over 20,000 participants, both young and old, marched
side by side to remember and recognize the efforts of those who have served.

First Lieutenant Marty Maguire, a Vietnam war Veteran from 1969 to 1970 said the parade was simply terrific. “It’s great to how many people came to honor the veterans today,” he said.

“I think that the veterans are being taken care of better than they were when we were coming back home.”

First Lieutenant Maguire also spoke highly of Mayor Bloomberg’s new initiative to provide incentives to veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. “It gives them a little preferential treatment for civil service exams and so and so forth,” he said.

One Navy SIP program onlooker, who requested anonymity, spoke differently, saying the country is simply not doing enough for its veterans.

“I believe we should be doing a lot for them and also recognizing them a lot more. Just doing what they do is so honorable,” he said.

He also mentioned his disgust at how many people approached him asking what was going on on the avenue.

“The fact that people don’t know what day it is today is actually really hurtful for a lot of the
veterans here.”
