Metro Giving: Collecting cans to feed the hungry

A City Harvest worker unloads a truck of donated food.

The holiday season is often associated with plentiful meals. For too many in New York, though, getting food is a daily struggle.

City Harvest is aiming to feed every New Yorker in need. From now until the end of January, the charity is running its largest food drive of the year.

“There’s always been a high demand over the holiday season,” said Lisa Sposato, City Harvest’s Senior Manager of Food Sourcing.

The Manhattan-based nonprofit partners with the NYPD, FDNY, Modell’s Sporting Goods and local public schools to collect food, mainly canned items.

“We have 18 trucks and three bikes,” Sposato said. “We’re on the road 24 hours per day picking up and delivering food.”

City Harvest is also the first organization in the world to pick up food that would have otherwise been thrown out from restaurants, grocery stores and caterers, said Sposato.

Sposato recommends donating nutritious food, such as canned vegetables, tuna and beans.
