Paul McCartney’s wife Nancy Shevell resigns from MTA board

Former MTA board member Nancy Shevell speaks with board members after resigning from her post.

Nancy Shevell, wife of former Beatle Paul McCartney, has stepped down from her post on the MTA board.

“In my 30-year professional career, this has been the highlight for me,” Shevell said of her 10 years on the MTA board. “I am so very emotional and sad right now.”

Shevell was appointed to the MTA board in 2001 by then-Governor George Pataki. She married McCartney last year.

“At times I’ll be in London. At times I’ll be in New York,” Shevell said about her future plans.

Shevell shared a goodbye peck on the cheek with MTA Chair Joseph Lhota and hugged several other board members on her way out of today’s meeting. She did not give a reason for her resignation.

“It was time,” Shevell said.

While board members wished her well, others felt their wishes had finally been granted. Shevell, 51, is also an executive with her family’s New Jersey trucking company and was often seen as a detached, anti-labor presence.

“She had a poor attendance record at MTA public hearings on fares and service cuts,” said Gene Russianoff of the Straphangers Campaign.

John Samuelsen, head of Transport Workers Union Local 100, had some choice words for Mrs. Paul McCartney

“Local 100 is happy that the long and winding road is taking Nancy Shevell away from New York City Transit,” Samuelsen told Metro.
