Homicide count reaches 31 after violent Wednesday

After three homicides yesterday, this year’s count has reached 31 in 25 days. The total comes to six more killings than the same date in 2011 and three more than the same date in the notoriously bloody year of 2007, according to police statistics.

A murder-suicide claimed the lives of a Logan couple yesterday afternoon when Leonard Baylis, 34, allegedly shot Alberta Cooper Sampson, 40, in the head and chest before shooting himself in the head at their home on the 4500 block of North 19th Street. Both were pronounced dead on the scene at 2:22 p.m. Police recovered a gun beside the wheelchair in which Baylis was sitting.

Less than an hour later, Rashan Mickens, 24, was discovered on the street on the 5600 block of Arch Street with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Investigators determined that he was sitting inside a brown 2005 Jeep Cherokee when he was shot. He was pronounced dead at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania at 3 p.m.

Quadir Bush, 32, was shot in the head on the 2000 block of Bridge Street in Frankford at 7:34 p.m. after he was approached by two unknown black males who opened fire, then fled east on Bridge Street. Bush died shortly before 8 p.m. at Hahnemann University Hospital.
