John J. Aheran: Bungling robber gets five to six years in prison

A Charlestown man was sentenced recently to a minimum of five years in state prison for a string of bungled robberies that left him with just $100 for his efforts, according to prosecutors.

John J. Ahearn, 31, pleaded guilty Wednesday to a battery of charges stemming from three separate incidents on Main Street in Charlestown between 2010 and 2011.

The first robbery occurred in December 2010 when Ahearn confronted a taxi driver outside the Tedeschi’s Food Shop around 1:15 a.m., according to the Suffolk County district attorney’s office.
When the driver refused to give him money, he slashed the victim’s hand, said prosecutors.

While on bail for that robbery attempt, Ahearn walked into the same Tedeschi’s in April 2011 and handed the clerk a written note that stated “Give me the money or I will kill you,” according to prosecutors. He made off with $100 and then later the next morning attempted to rob the Dunkin’ Donuts down the street.

Ahearn was sentenced to five or six years in prison followed by three years of probation, including alcohol monitoring.

His attorney did not return a call to comment.

Collection of charges

Ahearn pleaded guilty to armed assault with intent to rob, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery for the attempted robbery in December 2010, unarmed robbery for a stickup in April 2011, and armed assault with intent to rob and assault with a dangerous weapon for the third robbery attempt.
