Broadway on a budget: Finding ticket deals in the city

Everyone loves TKTS!

No one wants to pay $50 per show, and, from my experience, particularly because off (or off-off) Broadway isn’t as renowned as its more famous namesake. Often times, however, you’re missing out on an idiosyncratic experience that can’t be replicated on 42nd Street. Here’s how to do off-Broadway on a budget.

“TKTS” is no secret to many New Yorkers, as it’s an easy way to see many shows for half the price. The kiosks—located in Times Square on Broadway and 47th Street, the South Street Seaport at Front and John Streets, and in Downtown Brooklyn at the corner of Jay Street and Myrtle Avenue Promenade. are operated by the Theatre Development Fund, better known as “TDF.” To find out more information and booth hours, log on to You can also download the iPhone app to find out what shows are on sale at each booth.

“The Village Voice” is also a great and easy—not to mention free—way to find out what’s new in the world of off or off-off-Broadway theater. Flip through to the “Theater” section and you’ll find a variety of shows ranging in subject matter. Pick up a copy on the corner or visit: to view the listings. This publication is my always my first stop when looking for quirky, underground theater.

To find a considerable amount of off-off-Broadway shows for as little as $5, log on to It may be a long URL, but it retrieves a wealth of valuable information if you’re interested in seeing some inexpensive, off-beat performances. The site features tickets to Shakespearian plays, musicals, family-oriented shows, dance performances, and much more. All it takes is a little searching, and you’ll saving money and seeing more shows in no time!
