Katia Gaton: Woman charged in scam for promising jobs at Hilton Hotel

The Manhattan DA says victims were promised jobs at the Hilton New York.

The Manhattan district attorney has charged a woman in a job scam where she reportedly posed as a Hilton Hotel employee and promised people looking for work that she could secure them jobs in exchange for a fee.

41-year-old Katia Gaton is accused of scamming at least five people out of a total of $13,600 by asking them to pay her “application fees” and the cost of uniforms they’d need on the job.

The district attorney said Gaton has never worked at the Hilton New York. She allegedly promised her victims full-time jobs as bellhops, housekeepers and front desk assistants.

According to the DA, Gaton brought the job seekers to the lobby of the Hilton, promising them an interview with the manager. She would then disappear and later return, telling her victims that the manager unexpectedly became unavailable. She even offered them “tours” of the hotel’s public areas and sometimes set a start date for her victims.

“Taking advantage of people searching for work in a tough economy is reprehensible,” said Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance. “New Yorkers should be very wary of any supposed job opportunity that requires the payment of advance fees.”

Gaton is now facing scheme to defraud and grand larceny charges.
