Kanagala Seshadri Rao: Boston University grad student shot, killed in Allston (UPDATED)

Boston University students go to and from class along Commonwealth Avenue.

Police on Saturday identified the Boston University graduate student who was fatally shot in Allston early Thursday morning.

Kanagala Seshadri Rao, 24, of Brighton, was found near 112 Allston St., suffering from gunshot wounds, according to Boston police and Boston University.

“Our prayers go out to the Rao family and friends,” BU President Robert A. Brown said in a statement. “We are all deeply saddened by his death.”

Rao was originally from India, according to the Globe.

Police have yet to make an arrest.

Officers responded to the area of Allston Street and Glenville Avenue about 2:30 a.m.

The school sent an alert to members of the university community Thursday morning.

“A Boston University graduate student was killed in an apparent shooting shortly after midnight in Allston. Boston Police Homicide unit is investigating the case along with the Boston University Police. There are no suspects and there have been no arrests,” the alert said.

Thursday morning, less than 12 hours after the shooting, there was little sign that a crime had taken place. Some yellow police tape remained tied to a utility pole.

The shooting rattled members of the neighborhood, which is popular with students.

“It’s just scary,” said Lauren Dustin, who is also a BU grad student. She was walking her dog past the crime scene Thursday afternoon. “I’ll definitely have to be careful when walking around at night.”

Emily Roberts, 23, lives near the corner where the shooting occurred.

She said she woke up to someone ringing her doorbell and saw the police lights flashing outside her window.

“No one ever wants to hear something like that happened,” she said. “I’m hoping it’s an isolated incident.”
