VIDEO: Baby otters born at Prospect Park Zoo
There’s a sweet sight at the Prospect Park Zoo not seen in New York City since 1956: otter pups!
Three North American river otters, which are yet to be named, were born in February and have been unveiled at the zoo as the curious little babies explore their exhibit on the Discovery Trail.
The pups’ parents are Dixie, a 3-year-old female, and Oogie, a 10-year-old male. The pups are the first North American river otters born in a New York City zoo or aquarium since 1956 at WCS’s Bronx Zoo.
Members of the weasel family, North American river otters typically live near lakes, rivers and coastal areas of Canada, Upper Great Lakes, New England, and Atlantic and Gulf Coast regions of the United States, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society.
