TSA to fire 7 workers at Philadelphia Int’l Airport in bribery scheme

A TSA screener pats down a traveler at Orlando International Airport on November 24, 2010.

A bribery scandal at the Philadelphia International Airport will cost seven Transportation Security Administration workers their job, the agency announced Friday.

The firings are the result of an eight-month investigation by federal prosecutors which revealed that a TSA training instructor who administered annual exams to transportation security officers was accepting bribes. The instructor, Shannon Gilliam, pleaded guilty in February to taking $200 in exchange for a passing grade from one employee.

Since the investigation concluded, three employees resigned and the TSA informed seven others that they would lose their jobs.

The statement released by the TSA on Friday said the agency has a zero-tolerance policy for workplace misconduct.

“The agency takes prompt and appropriate action with any employee who does not follow TSAs procedures and engages in misconduct. The decision to propose the removal of the seven TSA employees affirms our strong commitment to the safety of the traveling public and to hold all our employees to the highest standards of conduct and accountability.”
