Ray Kelly: Colorado shooting suspect used red hair paint to look like ‘The Joker’

NYPD officers stand watch from a balcony overlooking the street prior to a speech by US President Barack Obama during a special fundraising performance on Broadway in June.

UPDATE: NYPD Commission Ray Kelly told reporters in a press conference Friday that suspected Colorado shooter James Holmes was using red hair paint to look  like the iconic “Batman” villain “The Joker.”

“We have some information, most of it is public. It clearly looks like a deranged individual. He had his hair painted red, he said he was ‘The Joker,’ obviously the ‘enemy’ of Batman,” Kelly said, according to CBS.

After the horrific shooting at a “Dark Knight Rises” screening in Colorado in the early hours of Friday morning, the NYPD is increasing their presence at New York City screenings of the film.

In a statement released this morning, commissioner Ray Kelly noted that the action was both a security measure and a way to alleviate fear:

“As a precaution against copycats and to raise the comfort levels among movie patrons in the wake of the horrendous shooting in Colorado, the New York City Police Department is providing coverage at theaters where the ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is playing in the five boroughs.”

In Colorado, Aurora police have a suspect in custody.
