Five killed in fiery Atlantic Avenue crash

The crash occurred at the intersection of Atlantic Ave. and the Van Wyck Expressway.

Two children and three adults are dead after a gruesome car crash in Queens early Sunday morning at the intersection of Atlantic Ave. and the Van Wyck Expressway. Three survivors pulled from the crash are reported to be in stable condition at Jamaica Hospital.

The Mercedes-Benz SUV, which appeared from the wreckage to be a 7-seat vehicle, was carrying eight people when it ran two red lights and swerved to avoid hitting a motorcyclist around 3:15 a.m. Sunday, the New York Daily News reported.

The SUV slammed into a concrete pillar on Atlantic Avenue, flipped and rolled over before bursting into flames, according to police. An 8-year-old girl, a 9-year-old boy, and three adult women passengers were pronounced dead on the scene.

One woman was found dead in the passenger seat still wearing her seat belt, said the paper. The FDNY had to use the jaws of life to pull two young boys, 7 and 9, from the burning vehicle. The 9-year-old did not survive.

The rest of the passengers, one of them an 8-year-old girl who did not survive, were reportedly ejected from the SUV.

The driver, a 45-year-old woman, was taken to Jamaica Hospital along with the 7-year-old boy and a 26-year old man. Police said the three have varying degrees of injury. According to DNAinfo.com, at least one is in serious condition.

Wellington Okoro, a cousin of the family, told the site that the carload was coming back from a Nigerian heritage conference at Golden Terrace Banquet Hall on Atlantic Avenue.

Sad reminder of April crash

Yesterday’s crash brings to mind an accident in April where three generations of one family were killed after their car fell 59 feet off the elevated Bronx River Parkway. The victims included a grandmother, grandfather, their two daughters and three grandchildren.
