Woman on scooter dragged by truck in fatal West Village accident

The accident happened at the intersection of West Houston and Sixth Avenue.

In a horrific traffic accident, a woman was dragged to her death after getting caught in the rear wheels of a flatbed truck.

According to police, the 58-year-old woman, whose identity has not yet been released, was on a foot scooter when she collided with a truck making a right turn onto Sixth Avenue from West Houston Street just before 9 a.m. Monday.

After she was caught between the truck’s rear wheels, she was dragged north to Minetta Lane until the driver realized he had struck her. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are continuing their investigation, but say no criminality is suspected.

Pols call for new legislation to protect pedestrians, cyclists

State Senator Daniel Squadron used this morning’s accident as a platform to tout a bill that would crack down on drivers who hit cyclists or pedestrians.

Together with his co-sponsor, Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh, Squadron said that officers, under the present law, cannot cite drivers for traffic violations unless the officer witnessed the crash. Their proposed bill would make it easier for police to enforce the law if the officer has reasonable cause to believe the driver committed a violation.

“Of course today’s tragedy is unique, and we don’t know if any of these critical improvements would have prevented it,” Squadron said. “But we must do everything in our power to prevent the next one.”
