Boston Skeeball League gears up for fourth season

Kelly Thomson tries her luck playing Skeeball at the Greatest Bar.

The fourth season of the Boston Skeeball League is kicking off tonight at the Greatest Bar, with over 140 people already registered to square off and hurl dozens of tiny balls.

Duke DeVilling, founder of the league, said it has grown in numbers since he started it with his wife in August 2011.

“I think in any city, young business professionals are looking for something to do. I think skeeball is kind of different… A lot of people go out and look for a reason to have a couple drinks, whether it is college football, or the NFL on Sundays,” DeVilling said.

As of now there are 46 teams, DeVilling said, with at least three people in each team.

The games begin next Wednesday, but tonight’s event opens up registration to new members, or “Rookskees” as they are called in the Skeeball League.

“You don’t have to be a huge athlete to play skeeball. Anyone can play and have fun . Some people get really competitive, but others just treat it as a social club.”

It costs $20 to register, and $10 each week to play. The eight-week season culminates with finals and a tournament, complete with trophies, prizes and T-shirts.
