Earthquake in Maine felt in Boston (UPDATED)

A US Geological Survey map of the exposure radius.

An earthquake that was centered in Maine was reportedly felt by people in Greater Boston tonight.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 4.0 magnitude quake struck about 3 miles west of Hollis Center, Maine at about 7:12 p.m.

The agency downgraded the quake at about 9 p.m. tonight after it was initially assigned a 4.6 magnitude.

Gov. Deval Patrick said in a statement tonight that there were no reports of injuries or damage in the state.

“Many Massachusetts residents felt the effects of an earthquake tonight. According to MEMA, which is monitoring events and has briefed me, the quake was centered some 30 miles outside of Portland, Maine. So far, we have no reports of injury or damage in Massachusetts. MEMA will continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents should use caution if they encounter any damage and take a minute to check in on neighbors, family and friends,” Patrick said.

The quake was less intense than a 5.8 magnitude one last year that shook a large portion of the East Coast and even damaged the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C.

Following the shaking many people took to Twitter to inquire about it and share what they felt.
