MBTA: Cause of Green Line crash still unknown

Emergency officials said 35 people were injured when two Green Line trollies collided at Boylston Station on Nov. 29.

The cause of a Green Line crash at Boylston Street Station is still under investigation today, three days after 35 trolley passengers were sent to the hospital with injuries.

While investigators have yet to shed light on why an outbound trolley rear-ended a stationary trolley parked at the platform, they have ruled out the possibility of track or mechanical issues, leaving questions about whether the driver is to blame for the accident.

“He remains out of service while the investigation is active,” MBTA Spokesman Joe Pesaturo said today, adding that the driver, who has not been identified, has not had any prior accidents while operating a passenger train.

The driver was, however, cited in a safety rules compliance audit in July 2009, when he was caught exceeding the posted speed limit on Beacon Street in Brookline, on the Green Line’s C branch. He was traveling 13 miles per hour over the speed limit, Pesaturo said, and was subsequently cited, disciplined, and given “re-instruction” by the training school.

Pesaturo described the audit as “similar to police with radar on the side of a road,” and said that Green Line managers perform the audits on a daily basis.

“(There was) not another issue until this week,” Pesaturo said, referring to Thursday’s crash. “He has traveled through hundreds of speed checks since then, with no violations.”
